Singapore, 3rd April 2025 — Mercy Relief’s (MR) emergency response team arrived in Yangon last night to deploy vital relief aid, including emergency shelter, food, and water to victims in Myanmar in the wake of a devastating earthquake. The team, led by MR’s board member Lieutenant-Colonel (LTC) (Retd.) Mejar Singh-Gill and Executive Director Muhammad Ashik, are joined by a group of medical professionals to provide emergency medical assistance in hard-hit areas.
The convoy will travel from Yangon to affected regions to deliver urgent aid. Their efforts are expected to benefit up to 10,000 individuals affected by the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck last Friday, 28 March 2025. This mission is also the first to include a medical team from Singapore into the hard hit areas of Myanmar, which includes Sagaing.
Assessing the scale of the disaster, LTC (Retd.) Mejar Singh-Gill said, “There are layers to the complexity when a natural disaster hits a peri-urban landscape that is facing a humanitarian emergency. Access to food, medicine and shelter become crucial especially for those isolated by geography. Mercy Relief is committed to deliver the much-needed aid to victims in dire need.”
Mercy Relief’s involvement in Myanmar spans over a decade, including responses to Cyclone Nargis in 2008 and the severe floods of 2012 and 2015. Reflecting on past missions, he added that MR’s continued presence and work shows its strong relationship with local communities and an unwavering commitment to providing aid.
Mercy Relief’s impact is made possible through the generous support of donors, partners, and the wider community. Every contribution counts. Mercy Relief urges fellow Singaporeans to join MR in responding to the crisis in Myanmar.
