Date: 17 July 2006

Magnitude: 7.2

In July 2006, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered a tsunami that caused extensive damage and loss of life along a 250 km-long coastline in West Java. Over 500 lives were lost, with another 400 injured and 273 missing. More than 50,700 people were displaced by the disaster.

How we helped:

  • Deployed two relief teams to the affected areas
  • Sent 300 tents, 500 blankets and 500 hygiene packs, as well as more than S$5,000 worth of medical supplies
  • Our medical volunteers provided primary health care and carried out malaria prevention and nutrition programmes
