SINGAPORE, 1 June 2017 – MERCY Relief, Singapore’s leading independent disaster relief agency, is continuing its Sri Lanka relief distribution operations this week, ensuring that communities in three districts receive critical supplies, after early monsoon season downpours caused floods and landslides.
The Mercy Relief disaster response team is working closely with ground partners and is expected to distribute the emergency packs to over 4,000 beneficiaries in the districts of Kalutara, Galle and Matara. Each emergency pack comprises of food and hygiene essentials such as, rice, dhal, sugar, onions, spices, tea, dry noodles, bath soap, laundry soap, sanitary napkins, and toothpaste.
According to National Building Research Organization, landslide risk advisories remain in effect in eight districts in Sri Lanka, as further rainfall is expected for the coming days. The floods have claimed 203 lives as of 8.30pm local time yesterday.
