Magnitude: 6.2

The Bantul Earthquake in May 2006 claimed more than 5,700 lives and injured more than 38,000 people. The extensive damage required a Mercy Relief team in Jogjakarta to be diverted to Bantul.

How we helped:

  • Sent two medical teams to provide support at the local hospital. We also trained local doctors on treatment procedures to increase the capacity of the hospital
  • Distributed medical and relief supplies worth S$15,000
  • Implemented a “Back to School” programme for children at 12 schools
  • Supplied 1,494 students with school uniforms, play packs and stationery
  • Signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Dinas Pendidikan and Kebudayaan (Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture) and reconstructed two primary schools – SD Ngandong I (Klaten) and SD Priyan (Bantul), together valued at $150,000
  • Carried out infrastructure projects worth S$5,000 at evacuation sites
