The flash floods that hit the North Sumatran district of Bahorok in November 2003 triggered devastating landslides that killed 245, displaced thousands, and destroyed a renowned Orangutan Sanctuary which was not only the largest for the endangered Sumatran orangutans, but also a significant source of tourism dollars. Mercy Relief was among the first foreign NGOs to respond, providing much needed emergency aid and later, materials to support rebuilding efforts.

We helped by providing:

  • Food, clothing and blankets to more than 400 families
  • Temporary shelters to accommodate more than 6,000 people
  • S$12,300 worth of building materials for reconstruction works
