Mercy Relief, Singapore’s leading independent disaster relief agency is en route to conduct a multi-country relief distribution operation with ground-partners in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, where several regions have been deluged by the seasonal monsoon rains.
Representatives of Mercy Relief will be conducting the first phase of disaster response, distributing items such as food, water and hygiene kits to fulfil the urgent needs of the affected communities.
Mercy Relief’s Executive Director Zhang Tingjun said, “With whole villages inundated and farmlands destroyed, some of the most pressing concerns for these affected communities are food and water, with the imminent threat of waterborne diseases. Even after the flood waters recede, these communities will continue to face challenges in restoring their lives due to the unprecedented scale of the disaster which has disrupted livelihoods and destroyed the homes of mostly rural communities.”
The total official death toll of all three countries affected has surpassed 700 people while more than a million have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the South Asia floods. Many affected areas remain inaccessible because landslides and flood waters have severely damaged roads and bridges.
