Project: Special Needs Training (SPENT) Programme
Date and duration: January 2011 to December 2011 (12 months)
Location: Palembang, South Sumatra Province
Beneficiaries: 40 caregivers, 1,500 special needs children
Problem(s)
- Challenging to find appropriate and relevant centres or support groups capable of providing quality care and supervision for children with developmental disabilities, and who require medical, mental and psychological assistance to integrate into society
- Most schools for special needs children focused on children with mild developmental disabilities
- More often than not, staff was inadequately trained to care for children with special needs
- No training or proper assessment and therapeutic tools, and the inability of staff to provide early therapeutic intervention often resulted in the children not developing to their potential
Intervention and Impact
- Promoted early therapeutic motor intervention programmes as well as physical and mental stimulation for children with special needs
- Trained a core group of caregivers. Equipped them with the knowledge and skills to support the care and supervision of special needs children, and the capability to share their knowledge with, and train, other staff
- Improved children’s limited motor capabilities to help them cope with daily activities independently, simultaneously preventing the deterioration of those capabilities
Cost: S$99,580
